Tsunami Aftermath

Information on affected areas, death toll, missing tourists, etc.

More than 30,000 people feared dead and more than 1.5 million people rendered homeless and destitute. This is the magnitude of the disaster that struck the pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka on the 26th of December.

The worst ever disaster to hit Sri Lanka in its history has not only rendered a vast number of people homeless, but has deprived them of their livelihood. The entire coastal area has been devastated and the worst affected are the people of the Eastern, Southern and Western coastal belt. Houses were flattened and boats of the fishermen swept away or smashed as towering 30 foot high wave after wave struck in all its fury turning the land into part of the sea.

People who were able ran for safety to higher ground with only the clothes they were wearing while many were swept away. Families have lost their loved ones and sole bread-winners. An entire train was swept by the tidal waves and most of the passengers are dead. Buses with passengers were swept away by the waves lashing the land with all its fury. Houses have been completely flattened and most areas are still under water. People are marooned and await rescue without food or water. The people do not have any kind of insurance.

Sea water that stormed into the land remains stagnant and has polluted the wells. It is now feared that this would be the breeding ground for decease unless early remedial action taken and medical facilities made available.

Schools, Churches and Temples have been swept away. In Matara, an ancient Church dedicated to Our Lady and which attracts many pilgrims including non-catholics has been shattered and the congregation including the Church Priest are missing.

Churches, temples and schools have become refugee centers and the Catholic Church is taking an active role in providing humanitarian assistance.
